Through an on-going process of collaboration between techies, artists, activists, youth leaders, educationalists and others, the Arab Digital Expression Foundation unfolded as a hub for knowledge production and sharing. ADEF strives to develop and promote collaborative models and processes for the production and sharing of knowledge in a quest to contribute to an evolving Arab identity; one for which knowledge is critical and shared knowledge is essential for decision-making. ADEF believes it is through open culture that freedom of expression and right to knowledge thrives and becomes a force that drives us to explore and discover our endless potential.

The Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF), through its core team and rich web of affiliates, creates and documents models of collaboration to design activities and projects which build on technology in order to develop self-expression, knowledge dissemination and production of thought. In its new iterations, ADEF engages with and supports Arab collectives, initiatives and groups to embark on projects that creatively capitalize on digital technology for the production of free and open knowledge and the promotion of artistic expression.

Since it began its activities in 2007, ADEF has trained 170 young Arab professionals (aged 20 to 30) from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan and Syria in digital arts based on open-source technology and various training methodologies for the purpose of promoting expression. In parallel, ADEF has developed experiential-based curricula for youngsters, in digital music and sound, digital video, creative applications on the web and graphic design. This knowledge has been used to train 343 youngsters aged 12 to 15 from eight different Arab countries.

ADEC is a two-week summer camp for 80 participants from all Arab countries. Emphasis in trying to ensure that 50% of the youth participating are female. The number of campers is meant to fulfill the objective of organizing a large-scale event that unlike many other youngsters’ gatherings which are pursued at a smaller scale. This scale level is believed to have a more tangible impact on adding Arabic digital content, enabling more varied voices in the Arab World and promoting active and artistic expression. Furthermore, the campers themselves come not only from different countries but also from different socio-economic backgrounds (underprivileged, middle class and upper middle class). ADEF pursues funding to provide full scholarships (including travel) to underprivileged youth and partial scholarships for middle class youth while parents of upper middle class youth cover the full fees of enrollment. Funding organizations, companies, communities and individuals also contribute to scholarships. This collaborative approach promotes a larger sense of community and linkages and is enriching and empowering.

ADEF believes the most effective model to achieve its goals is through a residential summer camp. The impact of summer camps on youth has been recorded and noted for years by educational experts and parents. Residential fun-based summer camps allow for the creation of an environment conductive to free expression. Coupled with a carefully developed program – a series of workshops children join daily – and highly trained, involved and enthusiastic trainers and staff; the results are astounding. Youngsters and trainers share experiences and bond through both the physical and digital spaces they create. ADEF provides the structure and then leaves the participants to explore and experiment with digital video, digital sound and music, creative applications on the web, creative physical activities and art workshops. Because of the diversity and intensity of the program and participants, the two-week time frame is often life-changing, for both youngsters and trainers. Youngsters go on field trips to explore the historic heritage of the host country.

Final products are displayed on the Web. Other avenues of exhibition are also arranged, through local and regional media and partner organizations.

The ADEC 2013 summer camp will be held in August 16 to 30, 2013. Summer camp fees are $ 1,450 to cover full board accommodation, education fees, computer lab facilities, and video & sound equipment scheduled trips, all sports and cultural activities, transportation from/to airport and health insurance during the camp period. ADEF is seeking sponsorship for 40 underprivileged Arab children who will be selected with the help of our partner NGOs in the region whose mandate focuses on youth development, ICT, arts, and expression.

Sponsors reserve the right to recommend children that may be eligible for participation and sponsorship as long as they fit the criteria of being from underprivileged backgrounds.

The cost to fund 40 children for 15 fully-residential days in the camp from outside Egypt is $ 76000 (the cost to fund one child is $ 1,900).

This includes:
* Venue: accommodation, food (4 meals/day) for the duration of the camp
* Equipment and consumables for training and activities and for three computer labs
* Travel and entertainment including exploration field trips
* Healthcare, safety and security
