notes from ranwa

please turn the below points into a conceptual note which will be the intro for the workshop, to be used for publishing and for knowledge production sharing. we need this in Arabic. Amr, please take the Arabic recording and do it instead of having to translate below. then send it to gharbeia for content editing and then to me and ali for final approval)

shaimaa and amr: schedule two hrs with ali, gharbeia and at least three of the selected invitees a day or two before the workshop aimed to conspire to come up with the conceptual questions that we know need to be addressed throughout the whole workshop duration. these questions will also be the tool for post workshop evaluation to measure what was not covered and why, etc... .

potential of open archive:

1. everyone (with the simplest camera-phone) can document >>potential for contributions and further interest in participation is endless.

2. equality: no one has priority of hierarchy over the other based on contemporary worldly value systems, valued contributers are rather based on content richness and viewership.

3. decreases prejudice: the more the contributions and contributors are different, while being presented through one archive, the more the viewer will be exposed to diversity >> the less the prejudice >> more peace, acceptance and compassion.

4. unfiltered/unedited diverse content stimulates critical thinking as no one is telling you where to look or how to see a situation. DEVELOP SENSE OF OWN OPINION >> REAL REACTIONS/ AND OPINIONS>> DEMOCRACY BASED ON KNOWLEDGE/ OF SELF >> UNDERSTANDING ONE'S OWN NEEDS.

5. connecting different people, societies, cultures, ...

6. no room for media to play; by revealing a diverse volume of raw content, there is no room for mind manipulation by outside sources. POWER TO THE PEOPLE.

7. without agent OR with 80,000,000 personal agendas = WITHOUT agenda >> trustwothy

obstacles of an open archive

  • laziness
  • fear of privacy invasion (lack of forward vision of how this might be useful for future generations)>> "why should i share?"
  • fear of losing personal credit along the way, "wasted effort and resources for free?"
  • fear that a 'dispersed' archive is unworthy of my contribution
  • fear that contribution will be misused
must identify big goals for motivation

Fatafeet Ideas

I think every one now has the motivation to archive the things is how to archive , the why after the revolution it comes to me as an obvious thing

address a number of conceptual questions in archiving that we hope are just as urgent and practical.

means to make an inventory of what we have, right now.

'we also have imagination, an idea of the archive as it could have been, and this imagination might speak even louder” Padma from Cairo workshop

They are people who believe in openness concepts since already they are having their material on line , on platforms as you tube, may be this part shouldn't take a big part of the discussion, I think more workshop should be given on motivating them to archive and annodate on one level , and stimulate their conviction.

Narrate history by the public , I understand they are not common people still , but the idea is a key point

   Trigger imagination

create motivation for contribution , not only about archiving and openness only , but also , about writing history from their perspective, it is interesting to look at the same event , and see how different people will look at it , it interesting to freeze one moment and see how different people would tell different , and thus create the motivation to archive

why archive using Pandora is a tool for archiveing documenting history

Text from Padma workshop in Cairo

To not wait for the archive, ever again, at least means to do something. To not wait for the missing archive to be recovered, or the promised archive to be unveiled, means to make an inventory of what we have, right now. We do have memory, a vague recollection of how we came to collect and share the things we care about. But we also have imagination, an idea of the archive as it could have been, and this imagination might speak even louder. We also have a sense of where our collective practices of borrowing, stealing, hoarding, indexing, remembering, and forgetting, have brought us, a sense of what we can do, and cannot do.

The archives we've been waiting for, will open soon. And they will be "open", as it has been announced, and remain "open". But open to what, and for what? Will it be the "open" in "open for business", a grand opening to close a number of deals, or the "open" in "open source", an invitation to read, write and redistribute? Could it be the "open" in "open-endedness", or even the "open" in the "open city" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_city), an early surrender to the enemy? These are questions for us, as we cannot wait, not any longer, for the archive to open.

What we can do is bring our tools, and see what they're good for, and what happens if we combine them. And despite our memories of waiting for the archive for too long, we can speak from experience. We can speak of the city, Bangalore or Bombay or Beirut or Berlin, its layers of dust and wires and memories. We can speak of what's missing when we speak of the city, as the city keeps changing, and will remember us as rubble, as under reconstruction, as for sale. But even in these cities, we have some old infrastructure, some new technology, and we make use of it every day.

To not wait for the archive, not this time, is to begin to negotiate: to what extent can we get organized, or establish common protocols, in order to keep a few things that we care about, in circulation? Where are the on-sites where they are being produced, and where are the off-sites for back-up? What can be carried over when things travel? Where are your friends tonight? Will the neighbours mind?
